electricityPort of LA/LB to Power Ships with Electricity – The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will be powering ships with electricity to cut down on air pollution by the end of the year. Shore power, also known as alternative marine power (AMP), will cut air pollution from ships at berth by 95%.

EU Funds Anti-Piracy Program – The European Union (EU) has allocated €37 million for a program to strengthen the fight against piracy in African countries. The Regional Maritime Security program will help develop the legal and judicial systems of countries in the region to aid in the arrest and transportation of pirates.

Truckers Strike in Kenya – Kenyan truckers have gone on strike and blocked the only highway from Mombasa to Nairobi, the main trade artery to east Africa. Truckers are protesting the new method of weighing trucks per axle and will not open the road until the government agrees to revert to the old system of weighing by gross weight.

India Signs MoU with China – India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China in order to address the trade imbalance between the two countries. The MoU addresses buffalo meat, fisheries and pharmaceuticals, as well as feed and feed ingredients.

The 10 year $370 million project involved deepening the Port’s main navigation channel and turning basins to accommodate bigger vessels.

Strike Causes Delays at Hong Kong Port – Dockers have been on strike for 8 days at the Port of Hong Kong and are causing a 20-fold increase in berthing times. Workers are demanding a 20 percent pay increase.

U.S.  Trade Pact with West Africa a Future Possibility – The United States is considering the possibility of a trade pact with the Economic Community of West African States called the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA). Ceremony for Green Port Gateway Project – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administrator attended the opening ceremony for the Green Port Gateway on Tuesday, March 26th. The Green Port Gateway is an $83.5 million rail-infrastructure expansion project that will improve the connection between the Port of Long Beach and the Alameda Corridor rail line. The project will also help to reduce congestion and improve the environment near the Port of Long Beach by shifting more cargo from trucks to trains.

China Inspects Freight Vehicles for Safety – China’s Ministry of Public Security announced a six-month safety sweep of vehicles used to transport freight to begin April1st. The ministry is currently urging police departments to crack down on speeding, overloading and other road misconduct.

China, Japan, South Korea FTATalks Begin on Proposed Tripartite FTA – South Korea, China and Japan have confirmed that the first round of talks on a proposed trilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will be held in Seoul on March 26th. Establishing an FTA would strengthen the countries existing economic and trade ties. Two more rounds of FTA talks are expected this year – one in China and one in Japan.

Construction Begins at Port of Melbourne – A $1.6 billion construction project on the third container terminal at Australia’s Port of Melbourne has begun. The project includes additional shipping berths and on-dock inspection facilities. The terminal is expected to be operational in late 2016.

EU Interested in FTA with Japan – The European Union (EU) may launch Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations with Japan during a summit in Tokyo on March 25th. The EU believes an FTA will boost Europe’s economy in addition to increasing exports to Japan by 32 percent, and Japanese exports to Europe by 23 percent.

Canada-Panama FTA to Take Effect in April – Canada’s Minister of State of Foreign Affairs has announced that the Canada-Panama Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will come into effect on April 1, 2013. The FTA will eliminate tariffs on over 90 percent of Canadian goods exported to Panama.

Israel, U.S. to Sign Customs Cooperation Agreement – The Israeli Tax Authority’s Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have signed a joint work plan that will bring the two programs closer to a mutual recognition agreement.  This agreement would aid in cross-border communication, coordination and collaboration between government agencies.

China Lowers Import Tariffs – Starting January 1st, China will be lowering the tariffs on 784 imported goods in an effort to boost domestic consumption.  Lower tariffs will apply to raw materials and spare parts for equipment manufacturing as well as products related to people’s livelihoods, such as healthcare equipment.
